What is a Newborn Photography Session like?
As you prepare for your baby to arrive you know the time will come when you are finally feeling a bit more like yourself. After your baby is born there is so much new joy in life! Yes, perhaps your baby will hardly know day from night (don’t worry mama that will pass!), and sometimes feeding can take so much longer than you ever imagined. But those early days are the time to capture those fleeting moments of new babyhood before time passes ever so quickly.
Your in-home newborn session with Anna Cummings Photography, your Albuquerque Newborn Photographer.
We’ll pick a mid-morning time, and day for me to come by, usually when the baby is two weeks or younger. But don’t worry older babies are fine as well. Older babies are not able to be swaddled or posed. I’ll talk with you about what to wear and what you need to know.
Before I arrive, you will want to run a vacuum through the rooms, and clean the clutter off the flat surfaces in the house (feel free to store it all in a closet or a corner). Don’t worry if your house isn’t magazine ready, I work to get the best angles of you and your home.
Maybe you’ll invite the grandparents over as well. Tip: Keep the house a little extra warmer than normal to help keep baby warm and happy. Baby led and no disruptions.
You won’t need to adjust your baby’s schedule for my arrival. If I arrive and the baby is nursing, or sleeping- don’t disrupt them! These sessions are made to be baby-led, for whatever your baby’s natural rhythm is. Real and vibrant images of your newborn. Wait until after I arrive and am set up to change baby into their outfit for photos, unless you are putting baby down for a nap. If you are then change baby first.
When I arrive, I’ll have the most glorious task of meeting your brand-new baby, and the rest of your family.
I may give a few tips on the outfits that you chose, making any last-minute changes as needed.
For a lifestyle session I’ll spend some time looking around, opening blinds, and turning off overhead lights to decide on the best locations for photos. I’ll guide you to snuggle near the large natural light sources in your house, in whatever rooms that may be. Maybe pushing some furniture into different angles or moving lighter pieces into different rooms. Occasionally I’ll put up my flash to make sure you get the best quality images possible.
I’ll get images of baby being changed into their outfit. Being snuggled by all of you in your family. A warm bath in the sink or perhaps just an extended nursing session. Maybe in their crib or bassinet if they are comfortable there. Just led to however baby is naturally most comfortable.
I’ll get photos of your family all gathered together.
If you are choosing to have posed baby portraits, either in addition to the lifestyle session or instead of the lifestyle session, then I'll set up the mobile studio. I'll take up space in a large room, usually your living room.
Photo from after the end of a newborn session with my mobile studio.
I'll settle baby and maybe have you feed them. We will talk about your color choices and I'll show you what I brought. I'll start by swaddling baby using the colors you have picked. I go at the rhythm of baby. If they are happy and content we will switch out a background or two, and try a posing basket.
I capture the emotion and love in your home and afterward you will have loving images that you cherish.
I go slow and we will stop frequently to let baby be fed or changed. It may take a couple of hours for the portraits.
I'd love to chat with you about how an in-home session would work for your family!
